For What It’s Worth: NYRMA Presents Buffalo Springfield

episode date - July 14, 2010

“Back in the old folky days, the air was magic when we played…” So sang Neil Young in the early ‘70s, lamenting the end of his first great band, Buffalo Springfield. For two short years from 1966 to 1968, Buffalo Springfield influenced popular music in a direction that was thoroughly different from most other bands of their time. Both Young and his bandmates Stephen Stills and Richie Furay had backgrounds in folk, playing the Greenwich Village scene with little recognition, until circumstance found them on the west coast, thinking about trying something more ‘electric’ – part Byrds, part Beatles, part whatever they could cook up.

The legend is that they encountered Neil Young, an old acquaintance from the folk scene, as he rode past them driving an old black hearse. The three ex-folkies decided to try something new, recruited an L.A. session drummer and Young’s friend Bruce Palmer to round out the rhythm section. A record contract followed quickly and in two years, they squeezed out three albums that remain classic representations of their unique amalgamation of country meets psychedelic meets folk meets jazz meets protest music meets rock and roll. Their music was rhythmically complex, with exquisite vocals and outstanding songwriting by all three principal members.

On Saturday, July 17, the New York Roots Music Association is putting on a very special that features music of the Buffalo Springfield. Approximately twenty performers will gather together to perform as many tunes, maybe more, with arrangements that pay deep respect to the original recorded versions. The show takes place at the Plainview American Legion Hall, at 115 Southern Parkway, Plainview NY. Your attendance is most welcome. Please come down to experience a very special night of music that will not be repeated. Admission is only $10, and a full bar will be available for those 21 and over.

All songs from today’s radio show appear on one of the three classic Buffalo Springfield albums, and all songs played will be performed at the show on Saturday night. We hope to see you there: at the Plainview Legion Hall this Saturday July 17. Start time is 8 PM. If you wish to know more, please call 504-621-4404.
